Re: CAMP JOSEPH E. JOHNSON #1424 U.C.V.

You did not ask about your ancestor's company, but I'll attempt to supply some of that information. It's easy to identify based on your mention of its selection as Wheeler's escort. This would be 1st Company "E" of the 1st Alabama Cavalry from Calhoun County, which entered service under Capt. David T. Blakey as the "Jim Powell Dragoons". Capt. Blakey was promoted Major of the 1st Alabama and eventually became colonel of this command, which he surrendered at Charlotte NC, May 3, 1865.

At the end of November 1862, General Bragg consolidated the original regiment into six companies and combined it with five companies of the 12th Alabama Partisan Ranger Battalion. Companies from the 1st Alabama were lettered 2nd "A" through 2nd "E" and 2nd "G". Companies from the 12th Alabama were lettered 2nd "H" through 2nd "K", in addition to "L" and "M". To my knowledge, there was no 2nd Company "F".

As Wheeler's escort, your ancestor's company served under Capt. Warren S. Reese as 2nd Company "G" from late 1862 through early 1864. Just before the Atlanta Campaign began in 1864, the regiment was reformed under its original letter designations, and 2nd Company "G" was divided. Some of the men remained in the 1st Cavalry, while others formed Company "G" of the 12th Alabama Battalion. I believe the original company ended the war as escort to Brig. Gen. William Wirt Allen.

I hope this wasn't too confusing.
