Thomas Hord HERNDON (Jr.), born 1 Jul 1828 in Erie, Greene, AL; died 28 Mar 1883 in Mobile, AL; buried in Magnolia cem, Mobile, AL, son of Thomas Hord HERNDON and Emma Sarah TOULMIN. He married on 21 Dec 1848 in Greene, AL Mary Edmonia ALEXANDER, born abt 1832 in NC.

EDUCATION: 'Biographical Directory of the United States Congress', 'attended a private school; was graduated from the Univ of AL at Tuscaloosa in 1847; attended the law school of Harvard Univ in 1848'.

OCCUPATION: IBID, 'was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced practice in Eutaw, AL; editor of the Eutaw Democrat in 1850; moved to Mobile in 1853 and resumed the practice of law; member of the state house of represetatives in 1857 and 1858; trustee of the Univ of AL in 1858 and 1859; returned to Greene Co in 1859; member of the State secession convention in 1861...unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Gov of AL in 1872; member of a State constitutional convention which met 6 Sep 1875; member of the State house of representatives in 1876 and 1877; elected as a Democrat to the 46th, 47th, and 48th Congresses and served from 4 Mar 1879 until his death in Mobile, AL 28 Mar 1883'.

CENSUS: 1850 US Census, Greene Co, AL, pg 291B, #733, Eutaw Beat, Thos. H. Herndon, Atty. at Law, age 21, property $2,500. 1 child, Helen is in the home. Also, siblings Edward and Virginia are in the home.
1870 US Census index, Greene Co, AL, Eutaw, page 659, 664 (NEED CENSUS)
1880 US Census, Mobile Co, AL, Mobile, 8th ward, pg 475B. There are 2 children in the household.

MILITARY: Obit says Thomas was Col of the 36th AL Regt during the civil war.
Thomas saw extensive action during the war and was twice wounded.
ORGANIZATION: About Nov 1863 per OR, during the Chattanooga - Ringgold campaign the 36th AL commanded by Col Lewis T. Woodruff, part of Clayton's brigade, part of Stewart's division.
10 Mar 1865 per OR; the 36th AL commanded by Col Thomas H. Herndon, part of Holtzclaw's brigade, part of the District of the Gulf commanded by Major Gen Dabney H. Maury.
CHICKAMAUGA, GA, 18-20 Sep 1863
The 36th AL commanded by Col Lewis T. Woodruff, was part of Clayton's brigade commanded by Brig Gen H. D. Clayton, which was part of Stewart's division commanded ny Major Gen Alexander P. Stewart, which was part of Buckner's Corps commanded by Major Gen Simon B. Buckner, which was part of the Army of TN commanded by Gen Braxton Bragg.
Brigade loss: 86 killed, 518 wounded, 15 missing. Thomas was wounded in this battle.
This battle was a Confederate victory.

DEATH: 'Marriage, Death, and Legal Notices from Early AL Newspapers 1819 - 1893', gives obit.
