Re: Claiburne Expedition
In Response To: Claiburne Expedition ()

Claiborne was a major crossroads and river crossing on the east bank of the Alabama River at the mouth of Limestone Creek in Monroe County, about twenty miles west of Monroeville.

During the evacuation of Mobile by the Confederates, Union Cavalry (Brig Gen T.C. Lucas) advanced to this point. Lt Gen Taylor's headquarters interpreted this as a column to link up with Wilson. Colonel Maury (not the General) with a detachment of the 15th Confederate Cavalry(your 450 figure seems about right) was defeated by a Lucas' brigade at Claiborne on April 14, 1865. Maury's casualties, according to OR reports, were 200 KIA, wounded, and captured. The Union force later entered the town and captured the enrolling officer (OR), and I suppose they secured the crossing as well. Not sure but this probably was a ferry, not a bridge. Lucas' report of this is OR, Ser. 1, Vol 49, Part I, pp304-305.
