Gen. Lucas marched from Montpelier and struck the Confederates near Claiborne on April 11, one day prior to the fall of Mobile. This may have been the first efforts at a flanking movement north of Mobile. Maj. Ives' led a battalion of the 1st US Louisiana cavalry in the initial attack, which was repulsed. The full regiment then attacked and drove off Col. Maury's cavalry. The Federals captured 70 men, 2 officers, and 2 battle flags. The Federals and Confederates both suffered 11 casualties.
