A few persons of related interest:

ADAMS, William B., Private, Dupree’s Independent Cavalry Company/Company D, 16th Conf. Cav. (Enlisted in Carrollton, Ala. Detailed to Commissary Dept. in Macon [probably Miss., rather than Ga.]. Also in 7th Ala. Cav.)

STINSON, John Thomas “Jack”, Colonel
Born 1817 in S.C. Major in the militia. Later transferred to the Commissary Department of the Provisional Army of the Confederacy. Moved from Pickens Co. to Columbus, Miss. in 1870. Died in Columbus the week before the 9/22/1896 printing of his obituary.

TURNER, Charles “Cass”, Captain & Commissioner
Born 3/15/1822 in Pickens Co. Moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 1848 or 1849. Then, by 1850, he moved to Shelby Co., Texas. Served in the Confederate States Army, but because of ill health, he returned to Fort Worth and hired a substitute [John Kinder]. Turner was then appointed Commissary and Beef Commissioner. He organized a company called The Tarrant County Hussars of the 10th Brigade Texas Mounted Infantry. It is unclear whether this was before or after service as Commissioner. Also in an effort to aid the war effort, he buried his gold under a tree in Greenwood Cemetery at Fort Worth during the war. Apparently, he donated this gold to Fort Worth. The city then used the gold to sustain itself during the war and to pay off its Northern debts after the war. A plaque near “Turner Oak” commemorates this and his service as a Capt. in the Texas Rangers. He died 10/31/1873 in Bryan Station, Tx., and is buried in Lot 71 at Pioneer Rest Cemetery, Fort Worth.

PALMER, Benjamin Terrell
Born 7/17/1832. Moved from Pickens Co. to Miss. in 1836. Enlisted with the 31st Miss. Reg., Co. H “Capt. Jenning’s Co.” which was raised in Itawamba Co., Miss. Received medical discharge. Re-enlisted with the Quartermaster’s Dept., under Capt. Owen, Post Quartermaster at Lauderdale Springs, Miss. Transferred to Capt. Kennedy at the Post Commissary in West Point, Miss. as a purchasing agent. Died of apoplexy in Lockhart, Texas on 7/26/1897.
