Now it's beginning to come clear. I've just found Sarah Rogers wife of Alexander on the 1860 Sumter Co. census. Old Alexander must've died around 1855, as youngest child listed is 6. It would appear the older sons remained behind in Greene Co. and fought with units recruited there. Peter is living with his mother on the 1860 census, so apparently he "fell in" with the local boys (5th AL Bn., Co.A)
