Hi, George...

Speaking for myself, things have been going very slowly in getting the casualty totals for the Alabama troops finished. I have excellent data for the 9th Alabama where I have looked at all of the possible sources (muster rolls; reports; newspaper lists; ADAH and National Archive records; soldiers' letters, etc.) and have compiled a master list. I am also looking at the rest of the Wilcox Brigade (8-9-10-11-14 AL) using data from other published rosters and sources (also for the 12th AL).

I need to study all of the figures a little more and pull the sources together before I post the data. After eliminating quite a few "duplicate" names, I have been surprised at the total number of men that were left who had enrolled in these regiments throughout the course of the war- some had as many as 1,600 men still listed.

It would be nice if people would volunteer to take one regiment and to do that kind of research for it. I would love to do the kind of in-depth research for the rest of the Wilcox Brigade that I did for the 9th Alabama, but I don't have the time currently to do that.

I haven't heard anyone say they were working on a particular regiment in putting together comprehensive enrollment and casualty lists: is anyone out there doing that? If you are, it would also be important to list the combined regimental totals for desertion/resignation/transfer/and discharges. The totals for those categories combined account for about 20% of all the men who enlisted during the war.

I hope to get some of my research posted to this site shortly.

John
