Thanks for your reply, George. Someone else in the family found the microfilm in the Birmingham library. It shows Jacob Benefield enlisting in Co. B, 39th Ala. Regt. on May 8, 1862, at Louisville, Alabama. The microfilm indicates he was captured at the Battle of Murfreesboro, and then is recorded as a POW at Camp Morton, IN. There is no record of his repatriation or his death, but according to the family he never came back from the war. That is why it was assumed he died at Camp Morton.
