Re: Capt. Henry Montford of Selma

He's a curiousity, that's for sure. I'm assuming the name was heard by a Federal officer and noted in Wilson's report, so it could be spelled differently. Trial with several variants, such as Monford, Munford, Mumford, etc. turned up little or nothing. 1st William H. (Henry?) Montford, Co. "C" 45th Georgia, is on record, but died at Richmond VA on Apr. 23, 1863.

The Alabama census is less helpful here than I'd hoped. I failed to locate any Alabama household under any of the variant examples given above. That squashes our mutual suspicion that he may have been a militia officer from Alabama.

Perhaps he was a refugee from another state who settled in the area after 1860. Perhaps the name was garbled in transcripion, and it's really something quite different. Without further information, I'm at a dead end here.
