Re: weapons issued
In Response To: Re: weapons issued ()

Almost all records of Confederate small arms receipts and issues were made at the brigade and division level. At the moment I don't have specific information about this brigade, first known as Clayton's, later as Holtzclaw's.

However, since these Alabama units (18th, 36th, 38th & 9th Battalion) served in the garrison of Mobile until April of 1863, I'd suspect they received nothing better than older 69 cal. smoothbore muskets until some time after they joined the Army of Tennessee. After that I'd have to check records of the brigade ordnance officer (O. O.) to determine what these men received and turned in.

Due to their exposed and unsupported position at Rossville Gap, many members in this brigade, particularly the 36th and 38th Alabama, were captured at Missionary Ridge. Those who managed to escape often threw away their muskets in flight. As a result, I'd expect to see evidence of wholesale brigade rearmament during the following weeks. New arms issued were likely imports: the British Enfield rifle (577 cal.) and/or Austrian Lorenz rifle (54 cal.).

I'll post something on this when I locate it.
