Re: Coffee Co. Volunteer Cavalry
In Response To: Coffee Co. Volunteer Cavalry ()

Cathy,
I believe the company you refer to was Capt
John C. Brown's Cavalry, made-up mostly of
men from Coffee and Covington counties with
a few from Butler, Montgomery and Pike; the
muster roll dtd Sep 25, 1863 shows two of the
Dyess line: Pvt Winfield S. Dyess, age 47 and
Pvt George T. (J) Dyess, age 19; George had
been discharged from the CS Army due to a
physical disability; I believe this company
later became Brown's Co, Barbiere's Bn, State
Res Cav; I see a George W, Dyess as Pvt, Co D,
12th Ala Inf Rgt and its possible he enlisted
with Brown's Cav at a later date; Co D of the
12th was accepted into Confederate service at
Clintonville, Coffee County in May 1861; its
also possible that the George T. or J. who
had been discharged from the Regular Army was
in fact George W. Dyess; I'm sure there are
others here who can offer additional opinions/
information.
