Can someone explain to me the difference between parole and exchange? Also, my gggrandfather was paroled at Demopolis after the surrender of Vicksburg, but in his application for confederate pension he stated that he never took the oath of allegiance. How did these soldiers get around taking the oath and "hot footin" it back to their regiments? Were they exchanged and did that nullify being paroled?
