Linda -

John S. Pemberton was a merchant living in Columbus GA. On July 2, 1864, Pemberton organized a company of sixty exempts to serve the military post of Columbus and was elected Captain. Members of Pemberton's company claimed exemption from regular military service by virtue of age, physical condition, citizenship, occupation, or other legal basis. A member who later became prominent in Alabama joined because he was underage (born 1848), which may explain why ADAH has this company roll. Others may have been foreigners, partially crippled, exempt as civil officers or otherwise released from service.

Based on the little information at hand, it's impossible to determine that John Powers listed on this roll is your ancestor.

Civil War ancestry research is like real estate - location means everything. A name match means next to nothing. You must first determine your ancestor's home county according to the census and other documents from the period. If your ancestor lived along the Georgia state line near Columbus and had an exemption of some kind, this might be the right man. Working with the information at hand, we don't know - not yet.

Even if man lived in Pike County in 1860 named John Powers, you should still be able to determine that he had a child and your ancestry can be traced to that child.

Feel free to ask questions.
