In Response To: Capt, John Crozier Barton ()

You are asking about John C Barton of Tuscumbia. He was an officer of Co K, 26th Mississippi Regiment, killed at Petersburg VA on Sept 18, 1864. The tombstone date is probably in error. John C Barton has several commendations in his military service file and was promoted Captain PACS after his death. The age and birthplace given for him in the Mississippi service file also match (age 22 at enlistment, born in Alabama). His body was probably buried in Oakwood or Hollywood Cemetery.

Another John C Barton served in the Trans-Mississippi as 2nd Lieut of Wood's Missouri Cavalry. He also has service with Stirman's Arkansas Sharpshooters and before that was an enlisted man in the Missouri State Guard. In 1860 he lived in Texas County MO, living in the household of Peter Barton. Particulars for the Trans-Mississippi officer do not match John C Barton of Tuscumbia.
