Why go to so much trouble to find one soldier's post-war account?

To answer this question, it's much easier to read King's military service file. The roll for Oct-Nov 1864 reports him as "in command of the brigade."

It's also possible to review the brigade inspector's report for October 1864. That will answer questions about regimental strength and arms actually in the hands of soldiers.
