I would like to offer a little additional clarification. "Orderly" does not always indicate "Orderly Sergeant". Another name for the Orderly Sergeant was First Sergeant, who was the senior non commissioned officer in a company. A separate position of orderly was filled by a junior enlisted soldier who responsibility was to support administrative operations at different organizational levels. In my research, I have found men who were the Regimental "Colonel's orderly" and an orderly for a Brigade commander. It should not be generally concluded that an orderly always means Orderly Sergeant, unless records specifically indicate the individual was an Orderly Sergeant.
In this case, however, Mr. Jordan appears to have been an Orderly Sergeant.
