Tom, I think your on to something, You just jogged my memory. My wife has a collection of civil war jewelry and in it is a number of pieces called "jet jewelry". Jet Jewelry is made from some type of polished coal. It was used in all types of jewelry from the civil war era. It is a very shiny black stone and is most often associated with period jewelry known as "mourning jewelry". I can see a 11 year old girl not wanting something that might be associated with death. But I've never heard it called confederate diamonds. I think we're on to something here. R.D.
