William McDaniel Reaves, b 1844

Now we're onto someone who served in Confederate uniform. The profile posted for him on findagrave is mostly accurate.

Enlistment date comes from his pension application. Service file for McDaniel Reaves includes enlistment date from muster rolls of Feb 26, 1863. He surrendered with the garrison of Fort Gaines AL, and was exchanged at Ship Island MS, Jan 4, 1865. Following his return to service, McDaniel Reaves received his parole with other members of his command at Meridian MS, May 13, 1865. The parole lists him as a resident of Wilcox County AL.

This man was not captured in Baldwin County AL. Fort Gaines stands on Dauphin Island in Mobile County. He enlisted in a company largely recruited in Baldwin County in 1861 known as the "Baldwin Rifles." Perhaps that confused your aunt.

Copies of the military record and pension application for this man can be ordered though this message board.
