Re: Foreign-born soldiers in Alabama units

Thanks, Miles, and also to Art and Bruce for their responses. From ADAH records, I learned that Irishman William O'Meara of the 5th (Co. F) was killed on the first day at Gettysburg; he was buried on the Moses McLean farm along a lane in a cherry thicket, which is likely the spot where he fell.
What other details do you know about the band of the 5th Alabama? Were they still active in mid-1863 as a regimental band, or were they part of a brigade band by then? How many musicians constituted the band and what kind of instruments did they play? (I am working on a separate project to document the role of musicians in the army.)
