Re: Foreign-born soldiers in Alabama units

On September 1, 1861, Privates Cabet Ehl, Benhard Schellentraeger, Washington Hopkins Seay and August Stephani of Company H, and Private Charles von Badenhausen, Stan Gawecki and Private Robert Lanier of Company I, were mustered in as Musicians in the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment. I know for certain that five of these men were foreign born.

Charles von Badenhausen was appointed Chief Regimental Musician.

I haven't come across much information on the regimental band as to instruments played and duration of their service, however, I can tell you that Charles von Badenhausen lost his left arm and a finger on his right hand at the Battle of Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862. He was subsequently discharged from the army on July 28, 1862. I don't believe his injuries were sustained behind the lines playing with the band, but rather out on the field of battle with the rest of the troops. Being in the band doesn't appear to have excused the men from combat duty.

There is a re-enactment 5th Alabama Infantry Regimental Band. They may be able to provide further information. Their Facebook page can be found at:
