Re: Alabama Cavalry Truett's Company

David --

William and Anna Roe appear on page 33 of the Cherokee County census of 1860. Alfred Truitt appears on page 10 of the same schedule, both living near the post office at Blue Pond AL. William's name can be found on the roll of Capt Truitt's company from Cherokee County AL as Rowe. A death claim was filed for Anna Roe by her attorney, S W Robbins, July 26, 1862.

William Rowe, listed as age 47, enrolled under Capt Truitt at Gadsden AL, Aug 16, 1861. The company entered Confederate service at Memphis TN, Oct 6, 1861. Capt Truitt and his men served under Col Nathan Bedford Forrest in Kentucky and Tennessee. Forrest's command was known in the Confederate War Dept as the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry.

Several weeks and quite possibly several months must have passed between the time of death and July 26, 1862, when the widow filed a death claim. At that time (early 1862) no Alabama cavalry organization with a number higher than 1st. The two regiments known as the 7th Alabama Cavalry came into existence in early 1863.

William Row (Rowe) probably died during the winter of 1861-62. He could have been a casualty during the Fort Donelson campaign, or possibly during the Battle of Shiloh TN (Apr 6-7, 1862). More likely he died of disease in camp.

References to different points in Virginia make no sense in relation to the known service of Capt Truitt's company. This company never crossed the border into Virginia and there's no reason for Rowe to have been there.
