WILLIAM HENRY KING enlisted on June 11, 1861, as a private at Marion, Alabama in Captain Henry Talbird’s Company, which became Company K in the 11th Alabama Infantry Regiment during the War for Southern Independence. He was present at the battles of Seven Pines, Virginia and was wounded in action at Gaines’ Mill, Virginia on June 27, 1862. King was appointed a Lieutenant and transferred to the Home Guards at Selma, Alabama in November 1862. He became a drillmaster with the rank of second Lieutenant at the camp of instruction at Talladega, Alabama where recruits were trained. On January 30, 1864, he accepted a commission as the first Lieutenant of Lockhart’s Battalion at Selma, Alabama where he served through much of 1864. King was appointed Captain of Company K of the 62nd Alabama Infantry Regiment and was wounded and captured at Mobile, Alabama but escaped his captors. He was born on December 6, 1841, and died on August 7, 1912, at Hamburg, Alabama. After the war, he became a farmer and lived near Hamburg, Alabama with his wife Martha, six children and nephew Clarence C. White.
