Gentlemen, I am looking for a place named Cold Creek in Alabama. A young soldier, Hardy H. Cain of Co. C 7th Regt. Mississippi Infantry was accidently killed there in May or June of 1863 while unstacking guns; apparently one was loaded and discharged as he unstacked them. What I have found is Cold Creek in S. Alabama near Creola and Coldwater Creek near Oxford. Was there another location by that name? What complicates the matter is that other records indicate he died of disease in Amite County in May 1863.

At this point I am more convinced that he was killed accidently since I have a contemporary quote from another Cain relative in Co. K 7th Miss. that clearly states killed accidently and buried at Cold Creek, Al. If that is the case, why would he be in either location since the regiment was stationed at Shelbyville at the time. He could have been returning from furlough, but I am not familiar with the railroad locations near either location. I also do not understand why, if he was travelling by rail, would weapons be stacked.

He could have been seriously wounded at some other location (anywhere from Bridgeport to Creola) and was buried at Cold Creek when he died on his way home. Any assistence would be appreciated.
