That's what caused me to wonder how he was there at that time. His official records indicate he got sick at Shelbyville and went to His hone where he died. The story about the accidently shooting himself came from a cousin in the same company. For now we at least know there were two men in the 7th Mississippi named Hardy H. Cain. the younger died in 1863 and the uncle died after the war.
