Thanks to all for the great information. The details on the Federal army through the area were very helpful to clarify some of the stories I had read locally.

The details on my GG Uncle helped to clarify a confusing situation for me. It appears to me he did not actually serve and that may have been due to his age and being the last son at home. When I looked into history of the 10th Alabama and saw they spent their time in Virginia, as Rick points out, it did not seem reasonable to me that he would have been in that unit so far from home, so late in the war at such a young age. I thought maybe the term "Volunteer Unit" might distinguish the unit as something different but the information from Alan that the State Legislature limited militia to home county only probably rules that out as well since that would not have been in Mobile. Seems to me it is more likely that this brother spent the war at home with his sisters and parents, trying to help out on the family farm and facing the difficulties of home life for the southern population.

Would anyone have any theories on why the wrong information would have been put on his tombstone? His three older brothers all served (2 were captured and survived the war as POWs) so why would his tombstone erroneously been marked as a veteran?

As always -- you guys are a wonderful resource to make sense out of the details. Thank you
