grave of former Alabama Rebel located in Ohio

Sergeant Israel Gets enlisted in Company I of the 42nd Alabama Infantry at Mobile, Alabama on May 12, 1862 for three years or the duration of the War. He was reported to have been born in Lancaster, Ohio and lived in Dutchess County, New York in 1860 near Poughkeepsie according to the census.

He was captured and paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi in July 1863. He was again captured in the battle of Atlanta, Georgia on July 22, 1864 and taken to Camp Chase via Nashville, TN and Louisville, KY. He would be paroled at the end of the War.

He died in Columbus, Ohio in 1918 and is buried in section 30 at the Green Lawn Cemetery under the name of Israel Getz. He has a civilian type of tombstone with no mention of being in the Confederate service. On his Confederate CMSR's he states as being from Dutchess County, New York. His ties to Alabama are unknown but his physical description fits other than being a 1/2 shorter. Hopefully an Iron Cross will placed next to his tombstone in the future once further research has been done. Thanks to Brent Nimmo of Columbus, Ohio for locating this missing former Confederate
