The 3rd Alabama was positioned on the right flank of O'Neal's Brigade (last regiment on the right) with the right of the regiment on the north side of the Orange Turnpike. The Brigade moved forward perpendicular to the road. (Some of the strongest resistance by Union troops was along the roadway.)

As to your ancestor taking four days to get to Richmond.......this is not unexpected. The battle continued until past midnight (primary artillery fire) on May 2nd, and the infantry engaged again at about 6:00 A.M. The 3rd Alabama was very heavily engaged on May 3rd, and suffered heavy casualties. The two armies continued to face each other at Chancellorsville until the night of May 5th when the Federal troops withdrew.
