I would contact the Alabama Department of Archives and History for information about him and for his service record- this would be the best source. He is listed in Generals in Gray by Ezra J. Warner which gives a quick outline of his background, and may provide more ideas of where to look. Confederate Service records are also available on microfilm at the National Archives in Washington DC and in libraries in Virginia.

Since he was from Lawrence County Alabama, personal information should be in their archives. Any personal letters could be there as well. You might find more information about him from researching Nathan Bedford Forrest and Joseph Wheeler since he served with them. The ADAH would also have information n the 4th Alabama Cavalry which he organized.
