Re: Looking for G-Grandfather's Burial (moved from

Nita, during the period that the 10th Missouri Infantry was in service, there was no regular Confederate hospital (as authorized under Part VII of the Military and Naval Laws of the Confederate States) at Pocahontas. The medical facilities at Pocahontas were "field hospitals", temporary establishments set up by the brigade or regiment stationed there. A field hospital could be anything from a vacant or commandeered civilian building to a tent. Since it was not a regular military hospital, there are no separate records for it. The only records of treatment, death, etc., would be carried in the company muster roll entries for each individual soldier.

On rare occasions, a personal journal of the surgeon in charge of a field hospital can be found -- but these are so rare that they are truly gems. Occasionally, personal letters of soldiers will contain some information about specific individuals, but absent any of these other sources, about the only information you're likely to find is what is contained in the Compiled Service Records of the 10th Missouri Infantry.
