Sam, George Clinton Harris may have served as a volunteer aide-de-camp to a field officer or general officer at Shiloh. In the early part of the war, young men of the "gentleman class" sometimes volunteered to serve as an unpaid staff officer. As such, they were not carried on the regimental rolls, but were often mentioned in battle reports and other correspondence.
