Re: Artillery in Pine Bluff 'Post Returns'

I'll have to get back to the film viewer to check on the Mtn. Howitzers, but I recall nothing unusual about the number. BUT, when, exactly, did the 5th KS Cav first obtain these cannon? It was while the 5th was at Helena, but can't track the date.

The Britten projectiles from Arkansas are said to have 7 groove rifling, but the surviving small 2.9-inch Blakelys do not (6 groove? if memory serves). A Parrott 2.9-inch has only 3 grooves, so little chance of a mis-id there. However, the only source (Lt. Sam. C. Thompson, 5th KS) which 'names' the guns at Pine Bluff calls them "two 3-pounder Parrott guns"; which was valuable to me for 'confirming' a 2.9-inch bore, but how did he get the number wrong? (unless this was a typo), and the identification as "Parrott guns" was simple ignorance of artillery nomenclature.
