I agree. I don't believe that we will ever find a definitive answer in official records as to the exact identification of the guns used the 1st Indiana Cavalry battery.

But, the descriptions given repeatedly by the various commanders in their reports indicate that they were "Small", "Steel", "Rifled", Light enough in weight to be mounted on Praire Carriages, looked like a small 6 pounder, and were thought to be of "English" manufacture.

The additional information that these guns were 2.9" caliber narrows the field quite a bit in my opinion.

The Type 10 Blakely guns (very rare) was 2.9". Looked like a miniture 3", 6 Pd ordance rifle commonly under by both sides. Was made of steel. It was only 36.5" in lenght. They weight only 198 pounds. Therefore it was light enough to be easily mounted on the Praire Carriage. This was the same carriage that the 12# Mtn Howitzer were mounted on. And they were rifled. According to Wayne Starks Encyclopedia of Civil War Arttillery (On-line) only three examples are known in the United States today, one of these is marked "London".

This conviently matches all the descriptions given of these guns in the official reports. While it may not be an eyewitness testimony, for a court case, it is certain enough circumstancial evidence that I would take the case to court with a reasonable chance of conviction.

I wonder if these three guns that Mr. Stark mentions aren't the 1st Indiana Gun's.
