4th Arkansas Battalion

In response to a previous post on the 4th Battalion Arkansas Infantry, here's a list of the battalion's stations as reported on the muster rolls --

31 Dec 1861 -- Columbus, Kentucky.
28 Feb 1862 -- Corinth, Mississippi.
30 Apr 1862 -- Camp Priceville, near Tupelo, Mississippi.
30 Jun 1862 -- Near Chattanooga, Tennessee.
31 Aug 1862 -- Loudon, Tennessee.
31 Oct 1862 -- Loudon, Tennessee.
31 Dec 1862 -- Shelbyville, Tennessee.
28 Feb 1863 -- Shelbyville, Tennessee.
30 Apr 1863 -- Shelbyville, Tennessee.
30 Jun 1863 -- Camp in the Field, near Livingston, Mississippi.
31 Aug 1863 -- Meridian, Mississippi.
31 Oct 1863 -- Brandon, Mississippi.

Note: The battalion was subsequently consolidated with the 4th Arkansas Regiment.

Here are some of the entries in the "Remarks" section of the muster rolls --

All camp equipage lost at Island No. 10 on 8th April 1862. Officers trunks containing Company Books, Descriptive List, Muster Rolls, Clothing Book and all papers necessary to show the accounts current lost unavoidably. My trunk was left with a citizen and may yet be recovered at some distant day. Some of the company have drawn their full allowance of clothing for six months, others comparatively none. Some data as to deaths &c may be obtained from letters addressed to the relatives of those who died when I return home. T. J. PAYNE, Comdg Company B, 4 Ark Battalion, Corinth, May 11th, 1862.

This company was under E. Kirby Smith in the campaign in Ky. Was in the Battle of Richmond on the 30 day of August 1862. We were in the final charge and only got one man slightly wounded.

This company was engaged in the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Dec. 31, 1862, in which one was killed, 9 wounded.

During the months of March & April nothing of particular interest occurred. We were ordered on picket the 11th March, 8 miles north west of Shelbyville, and remained there 3 or 4 days when we returned to our camp near Shelbyville. T. TOONE, Capt.

On the 10th day of May the command left for Jackson, Miss. We reached that point on the 20th & from there we marched to Canton. Nothing of importance taking placing during the two months. We had to live on very poor beef and coarse corn bread and often short rations of that.

On the 8th Sept. we taken up the line of march from Meridian, Miss. for Chattanooga. We were there engaged for two days on the 19th and 20th. On the 22d we received orders to return to Meridian, Miss., at which place we arrived on the 1st Oct. On the 19th Oct. we left Meridian and arrived in Brandon on the same day. D. C. MARSHALL.

During the month of January and February the Company was stationed at Columbus, Ky. In that time there were 19 deaths in the Company from measles and exposure.

This Pay Roll being made out some time after the period for which pay is drawn, the Company Officers have been changed under the order for re-organization of the Army, Capt. Hanson, Lts Tennison & Deadwiley not having been re-elected and Lt. J. A. Ross having been first elected Capt. of said Co. and afterwards elected Maj. of the Battalion. The Officers now are: S. O. Cloud, 1st Lt.; E. B. Whitley, 2d Lt.; G. F. Williams, Jr. 2d Lt. S. O. CLOUD, 1st Lt. Comdg Co. C, 4 Ark. Batt.

The Company was engaged in the Battle of Murfreesboro in which private John Thompson was killed & Sergt J. V. Browning was wounded in the side & Corpl R. W. Strickland wounded in the neck & private F. M. Sevidge wounded in the knee & private Henry Saunders wounded in the thigh. S. O. CLOUD, Capt. Commanding Company C, 4 Arks Battalion.

The company was in the Kentucky Campaign under General E. Kirby Smith and was in the Battle of Richmond, Ky., August the 30th, 1862, and assisted in making the final charge. A. Pall was seriously wounded in the breast during the fight. B. F. Witcher was detailed on the 31st to gather up the arms on the battle field, and while in the discharge of that duty had his left arm so badly shot that amputation was necessary. During the campaign the Co. marched 775 miles.

This company marched from Bridgeport, Ala., to Murfreesboro, Tenn., about one hundred miles, and was engaged in the Battle at Murfreesboro. Lost about one third of our men in the fight, killed and wounded.

On the 5th July ‘63 Johnson army fell back from Big Black to Jackson, Miss. The Enemy followed and laid siege to the place. We were under the enemy’s fire for eight days. No casualties in this company. We then fell back to Morton, Miss. Nothing else occurred during the past two months worthy of note.
