Doyle, I agree with you that the Confederates considered Arkansas Post to be a strategic site, and correctly considered that the place would eventually be of interest to the enemy.

The surprise I was referring to was McClernand's unexpected assault from Vicksburg in January 1863 -- unexpected even by his own superior, U.S. Grant. Your D-Day analogy is a good one.
