There were at least four men named James Sutherland from northeast Arkansas who served in the Confederate army --

James Sutherland enlisted in Co. I, 32nd Arkansas Infantry, at Camp Cache, Arkansas, on June 20, 1862; and was present for duty through February 29, 1864 (date of last known muster roll). In August 1864 he was transferred to Co. D, 45th Arkansas Mounted Infantry, one of several mounted regiments organized for Price's Missouri Campaign of 1864. He was still serving with this command when he was paroled at Jacksonport, Arkansas, on June 5, 1865. His parole states that he was age 23, born in Tennessee.

There was another soldier named James Sutherland who enlisted in Co. I, 30th Arkansas Infantry, at Jonesboro, Arkansas, on July 2, 1862. He deserted on the march to Van Buren, on November 20, 1862; rejoined his command on March 28, 1863; and deserted again on the march to Helena, on June 21, 1863.

Another James Sutherland enlisted in Co. C, 39th Arkansas Infantry, at Clarendon, Arkansas, on June 19, 1862. On July 12, 1862, he reportedly "deserted and went to the federals".

And finally, another James Sutherland enlisted in Co. A, 36th Arkansas Infantry, at Searcy, Arkansas, on June 14, 1862; age 24. He was mustered into service at Springfield, Arkansas, on June 24, 1862; and was present for duty through February 29, 1864 (date of last known muster roll).
