This sounds like the location that Tom Ezell was talking about being outside of Little Rock. This description would put Camp Texas somewhere near the Pulaski-Saline county line today, if I'm correct.

It was Hindman's general orders that all camps be established at least 5 miles from any town. So I would not expect to find it anywhere closer than that to Little Rock and at least that far from Benton. The only problem is that along Highway 5 near the Pulaski-Saline county line would place Camp Texas some distance from the Saline River.

My interest in Camp Texas is that Col Robert R. Garland of the 6th Texas Infantry was in charge of a camp of instruction, where he was camped, until the 6th Texas Infantry was ordered to Pine Bluff because of the Union expedition from Helena to Claradon Ar. August 4-17th 1862. To get to Pine Bluff the 6th Texas had marched from their camp (Camp Texas?) by way of the Benton to Princeton road through present day Tull to Pratteville until they intersected with the Pine Bluff to Hot Springs road.

I was under the impression that in some of the accounts of the 6th Texas, that they had spoke of coming to Benton from Rockport and marching off the road, across a large field, to camp beside the Saline River.

The 6th Texas could not have been at Camp Texas more than 3 weeks at best in late July early August. It is possible that given the number of times orders were issued and countermanded in the summer of 1862, that the camp on the Saline river was only a temporary camp prior to them moving on to the location that became Camp Texas, in compliance with Hindmans orders about the location of camps outside the 5 mile limit.

The 6th Texas was one of the earliest Units to stay at Camp Texas. And like Pine Bluff there were several different Camp site of different Texas Units around Benton until they were "consolidated" into a common area. So I wonder how many different site were referred to as "Camp Texas" before there became an established "THE CAMP TEXAS".

It is my understanding that "THE" Camp Texas was more closely associated with the 10th Texas Infantry of Col Nelson, which came later to Arkansas, that the 6th Texas of Col. Garland. I wonder if there are 2 Camp Texas'? I am not sure that the Camp of the 6th Texas on the Saline was in July of 1862 in fact referred to as "Camp Texas", or if they did move from there to "Camp Texas" prior to moving to Pine Bluff. So my search goes on.

In any case thanks for the great information.
