Hi All, I recently aquired a large format, albumen type
photograph, mounted on thick cardboard like backing, that
appears to be a small Confederate Reunion. The actual image is
approximately 7 X 9 inches, mounted on a board about 12 x 14.
There are 37 men lined up in two rows, one
on a porch of a hotel or general store, and the other row
just below them in the street. All the men though old, almost appear
as if at attention, and one man on the left
end of the lower line,
has his musket up at "Shoulder Arms".
Very few ribbons, medals, or flags visible, such as
are frequently seen in GAR photos. One man in the center of the
lower line appears to be the ex-commanding officer.
He has a long civilian frock coat, nice tall satin looking
top hat, cane, and is the ONLY one in the group wearing
a ribbon with medal. This image came from Marion County, Arkansas,
near Flippin, and I presume it might possibly have been taken at Yellville,
or Harrison! But, despite
scanning it at a high resolution I cannot read the signs
hanging on the building. I think the only chance of ever
Identifying these guys may be with the apparent commanding
officer's image. Someone out there may have seen him in
other photos or at a geneaology/history website. I am aware that the
14th, 16th, & 27th Arkansas Infantry, and
Harrell's Battalion, all had a substantial amount of
Yellville and Marion County soldiers. Forwarded a large
copy of the image to my friend, Troy Massey in Harrison,
who is a long time SCV member, and he is giving it a hard
look. But, nothing definitive yet. If any of you are familiar with a
lot of Arkansas Officer faces, perhaps
even in their later years, I would love to email YOU a
good scan too. That officer type looks very familiar, but
I just cannot pin him down. Please email me if you would
