Thank you for clarifying this! I guess the previous discussions occurred while I was in the sandbox, or I was otherwise occupied because I do not remember seeing them. I was not aware that a controversy existed over the identification of the Ensign. That is why I love this Board. I learn so much each time I contribute. Especially from my mistakes!
However, you would think a museum that touts itself as a "National" museum would have the record straight. I found several references to the ensign residing at the museum, and I am guilty of the sin ,"I made an assumption". (Violation of Rule #1 of Historical Research). Shows how little I know of naval history! In my defense I am an Infantryman, utilizing what scant intelligence resources I had on hand. I am not a professional researcher and do not even remotely claim to be! This is my great hobby.
