Re: 1st KCV POWs taken at Camden

The source for both of the information for both of these individuals is the "Memorandum From Prisoner of War Records" that are in their CMSRs at NARA. As far as who lists them as present, I infer that the Rebels did.

Both men are referenced as being captured at "Camden Ark. while in Hospl. April 26, 1864." and both are listed as "Present at Princeton June 16 /64" One had a "Left Shoulder Fracture" the other had his "Left arm amputated below elbow on May 25, 1864." It is likely and probable that both of these men were WIA at Poison Springs.

I have since read Mark Christ's "All Cut to Pieces and Gone to Hell" which answered part of the questions I posed in my initial posting in that Mark references members of the 2nd Kansas Colored being captured in the hospital at Camden (as a sister unit to the 1st KCV, makes sense that wounded members of the 1st KCV would be treated in the same "colored" ward of any Union hospital at Camden). Also, Mark references that black POWs were reportedly executed while at the Rebel hospital at Princeton as witnessed by the Surgeon of the 29th Iowa, William L. Nicholson, who remainded behind and was also captured at Camden.

The final disposition of the 2 members of the 1st KCV captured at Camden is not yet known. The information on the Muster out Rolls states that one died of wounds and the other mustered out with the regiment. I take this information with a grain of salt as there are definitive/proven errors on the MO Rolls for the 1st KCV. Especially with regards to the members of the regiment that became POWs; several were listed as KIA only to show up at Pine Bluff upon exchange/release from Rebel custody.

Chris Tabor
