I have located the following information - though I have NO idea what it means.

I did find Harrell's Battalion on Gerdes' site - don't know what to do with that information. Would be greatly interested to learn whatever I can of his civil war experience.
It appears that Tilford enlisted the same day with William GAGE - How can I find out which one??? there are multiple williams in every generation. MAYBE Tilford's cousin (3 years older) brother would have been only 14 years old.

I have found information on line that Tilford's older brother Abraham died in 1861 of measles in confederate camp.
My father (Clyde) was born in 1911 - his mother died in 1919. He was raised by different family members including his grandfather Tilford so the civil war doesn't seem so far removed a time to me.
For any genealogy minded, this is the Nicholas/David Gage family line. The family line usually ends with John Henderson Gage b. 1865, d. 1955 (my grandfather). I assume because my grandmother died and the children were sent to different family members. John Henderson Gage's date of birth is often listed as "1902?" Tilford married late and life and had, I believe, 13 more children. Any suggestions for getting the genealogy back on track would also be greatly appreciated. I have written to a couple of people on genealogy lists, but got no meaningful response.
