Woodruff and most of them enlisted in what was initially known as Weaver's Artillery Battery after Lt. Omar Weaver, their fellow battery mate who was killed at Wilson's Creek. Woodruff was the first commander, but after his promotion, the battery was commanded by Captain John G. Marshall and therefore known as Marshall's Battery.
