Well, most were young and tough and had to be to make it back from that ride to Kansas.
While in some ways it was not the Confederacy at its finest, it took some brave men to
attempt it and so many were lost, so the fact that your relative was there and if he did survive
to make it back, that speaks well for him in my opinion.
