Re: Militia enlisting in Volunteer Regiments

Sifakis is mistaken about Williamson's Battalion being composed of eight companies of the 15th Arkansas Militia. The companies were actually recruited and organized in Conway, Franklin, Pope and Yell Counties. The 15th Arkansas Militia was the militia regiment of Pope County only. Many of the men comprising these companies were also members of their respective county militia regiments, but that holds true for many Arkansas Confederate soldiers. More importantly, there was no mechanism in the State militia law which provided for a militia unit (company, battalion or regiment) to be transferred to Confederate service, although the Governor, as commander-in-chief, might be able to broadly interpret his powers to provide for such action. However, there is nothing I can find in the record that points to any action by the Governor in matter of Williamson's battalion.
