The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Majors Enoch Wolfe and Major Jacob Wolf

There is a discussion line in the Missouri Civil War Message Board concerning Major Enoch Wolf(e). It says that "testimony given by John Campbell on 11/11/1864 in St. Louis during the Major's stay in prison awaiting execution" Campbell stated Wolf was a desperado in northern Arkansas."

I have never heard of Enoch Wolfe being referred to as a "desperado". So, I happened to remember I had a booklet on the Historic Wolf House. I have often wondered if there was a family connection between Jacob Wolf and Enoch Wolfe. Jacob was supposedly the owner of the the Wolf House.

So,I'm wondering which Wolf that Campbell was referring to. There was a Major Enoch Wolfe spelled with an e and a Major Jacob Wolf without the e. Both were from around the same area. Enoch from Izard County and Jacob from Baxter County which borders Izard County. Both were Majors. Both were captured. Not sure if Jacob was paroled or sent north. Jacob's home is on the National Register of Historical Places. So, it is interesting to try to figure out which Wolf(e) Campbell was referring to. Major Enoch was sent to St. Louis, was supposed to have been executed but because he was a Mason, he was reprieved.
