If he remained on the rolls, which he was, he would have had to go along with the requirement to serve for 3 years, or the duration of the war. These extensions mostly occurred during the "Reorganization of the Army," around May, 1862.

There were no extensions, as such for absences.

John C. Griffin, Private, enlisted in Capt. Henry's Company (Henry Hornets), Arkansas Infantry,* mustered into served for 12 months, at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, July 25, 1861, absent on sick furlough from August 17, 1861, recorded present July 11, 1862, recorded as absent without leave from retreat from Abbeville, present at the Jan & Feb, 1863 muster, recorded absent, sick, Sept. 1, 1863, absent with leave December 3, 1863, recorded on August 31, 1864 as absent, sick since June 7, 1863, whereabouts unknown, no further records, this was the last muster roll in these records, as such, we would not know if he ever returned to the regiment

* This company subsequently became Company C, 9th Regiment Arkansas Infantry
