He may have become a bushwhacker, assuming he recovered sufficiently from his illness to ride. Many men chose to stay close to home to protect their home and family, especially when the troops were ordered across the Mississippi. If the term "bushwhacker" sounds unseemly, call him an irregular or partisan or guerrilla or "the resistance". ;-)
