Re: SWEENEY RIFLEMEN = Company I, 5th Arkansas???

Well, that settles it as far as I'm concerned -- the officer list clinches it. Another researcher I was corresponding with several years ago had an interesting theory about the conflicting company names. He said that a document he'd seen -- a list of company names of the 5th Arkansas, along with the names of their respective captains -- was in hard-to-decipher 19th century cursive. According to him, the penmanship was so bad that "Sweeney" could be construed as "Bevering". Not having seen the document he was talking about, I can't say whether his theory holds up or not, but it certainly sounds plausible, based on some of the arcane penmanship I've seen in other documents.
