It is peculiar that he ended up with the State Troops rosters, since he had nothing to do with them (in Northwest Arkansas at any rate). Capt. James McIntosh was the Confederate mustering officer in that area, and it was he who mustered the companies that composed the battalion. As a Confederate organization, McRae's 3rd Battalion Arkansas Volunteers was assigned to McCulloch's Confederate brigade. I posted a brief summary of the evolution of the battalion in another post.
