Re: Black River Rifles, Co. C (8th Ark.)

I too have an anestor in this unit and have the same questions as the last gentleman. My direct ancestor from this unit is David B. Brown, listed as D. B Brown on the Gerdes website. He also lived in Lawrnece County, Arkansas and was also in Black River Rifles. He also was at Corinth, Ioka et cetera. He died May 1, 1865 but we don't know anything more about his death. Since he died just at the end of the war we have always wondered if his death was as a result of the war, or what? We know nothing about what he did after the battle of Corinth where the Gerdes website says he was caprured and paroled 8 days later. What did he do after that? How can I research this and find out?

I am related as well to every Wayland and Richey (and there are several of both) in that unit. David Brown's daughter Josephine married Jeffery Richey, and Jeff's mother was a Wayland. Jeff and Josey [Brown] Richey are my great grandparents. They moved to Indian Territory in 1872. Their daughter Lona Richey married Noah Hawkins. Their son was my father and was a WW2 veteran, and was in the Army Artillery stationed at Schoefield Barracks on Oahu when the Japanese attacked on Dec 7, 1941. He's passed away now, but he used to talk about standing in a chow line outdoors when the Japanese planes flew over and strafed them. Dad's youngest brother Eual Lee Hawkins was killed in Normandy just before the breakthrough on July 19th, 1944.

Any help appreciated.

thanks

Vance Hawkins
