Re: Question regarding Robert C. Newton's Regiment
Newton's regiment of Arkansas State Troops is a tricky one for researchers. It's genesis was the 1st Battalion Arkansas State Troops (Cavalry), organized in 1863 and known as Trader's (later Pettus') battalion. It was increased to a regiment in 1864, with Col. Robert C. Newton commanding. Typically, the designation established by the State Military Board (3rd Regiment State Troops) was ignored in the field, and it was usually referred to as the 10th Regiment State Troops. Its component companies were recruited in southwest Arkansas, mostly in Clark, Hempstead, Columbia, Sevier, Montgomery, Polk and Ouachita counties. Dr. Ken Byrd is the resident expert on this regiment.
